3 conditions for using eSIM

You can start using eSIM immediately if you meet the following three conditions. Most people already meet the requirements.

eSIM-compatible devices

Most iPhones and major Android smartphones released since 2018 support eSIM.

It is definitely compatible with iPhone XR and later models.

SIM unlocked

Devices released in October 2021 or later are generally unlocked. Devices released before that date can also be unlocked for free by their carriers.

This can be checked on the settings screen.

Devices manufactured after October 2021 generally do not require this.

OS is the latest version

Updating to the latest OS will make setting up your eSIM smoother. While it's still possible to use older OS versions, we recommend updating to the latest version.

How to check it yourself

Even if your device isn't on the list, you can easily check for eSIM compatibility through your device's settings screen.

This is the easiest and most reliable way to check. You can check whether the EID (eSIM identification number) is displayed in your device's settings app.

For iPhone/iPad

    Open the Settings app.

    "Tap ""General"" → ""Information"""

    "Scroll down and look for the ""EID"" item."

    If a 32-digit alphanumeric code is displayed, it supports eSIM.

For Android

    "Tap ""Device Information"" or ""Terminal Information""."

    "Look for the ""EID"" or ""eSIM Status"" field."

    If EID is displayed, it supports eSIM.

"Menu configurations vary by manufacturer. You can quickly find it by entering ""EID"" in the search function within ""Settings""."

Preparation Checklist before departure

Once you have checked your device, this is all you need to prepare before leaving for Japan.

Set up eSIM in a Wi-Fi environment

An internet connection is needed to scan the QR code. Complete the setup on your home Wi-Fi before you leave for Japan.

Switching to eSIM for data communication

"Upon arrival, switch your data connection to eSIM by going to ""Settings"" → ""Cellular""."

Turn on data roaming

Turn on data roaming for your eSIM. You can leave roaming for your Japanese SIM card turned off.

Connection test

Upon arrival at the airport, turn off Wi-Fi and check if you can connect using mobile data.
