Before starting: three things to check

For a smooth setup, Please check the following beforehand.

A Wi-Fi connection is required.

Installing the eSIM requires an internet connection. Please do so in a stable Wi-Fi environment.

Use a stable internet connection at home or in a cafe.

SIM unlocked

Devices purchased from carriers may be SIM-locked. Please unlock them beforehand.

You can unlock it through your contracted carrier.

The QR code can only be used once.

For security reasons, the QR code can only be scanned once. If scanning fails, please contact support.

It's a good idea to save a screenshot just in case.
STEP 2

Scan the QR code to install your eSIM

Simply scan the QR code included in your purchase confirmation email. It takes approximately 2 minutes.

Open the Settings app.

"Tap ""Settings"" → ""Cellular"" → ""Add eSIM"""

Scan the QR code

Scan the QR code in the email with your camera.

Activate

"Tap ""Add mobile data plan"" to complete the process."

Change the line name (recommended)

"Giving the added eSIM a clear name, such as ""Travel,"" will make management easier."

Important: Data roaming is still OFF.

Please keep data roaming turned off until the pre-test (STEP 3).

STEP 3

Before departure, test with confidence in your home country

With 100MB of free test data you can confirm the eSIM works before you travel. Your travel plan data will not be consumed at all.
*Test data can only be used in your home country (outside Japan). It cannot be used in Japan.

Test Procedure

Turn off Wi-Fi

Since eSIM functionality cannot be tested when connected to Wi-Fi, please be sure to turn it off.

Turn on the eSIM connection.

Go to Settings → Mobile Data and turn on the line for the installed eSIM.

Turn on data roaming

"Turn on ""Data Roaming"" in the eSIM settings."

Check the connection in your browser

Open the website in Safari or another browser, and if it displays correctly, the test is complete.

Turn off roaming after the test.

After the test, turn data roaming back off. Turn it on again when you arrive in Japan.

The test in your home country uses the free 100MB of test data and does not consume your plan data

STEP 4

On site, connects immediately

Once you land, just turn on data roaming. It connects to a Japanese network automatically.

Turn on data roaming

Go to Settings → Cellular → Turn on Data Roaming (if you turned it off during the pre-test).

Internet connection complete

That's all it takes to connect. You can start using maps, ride-hailing apps, and social media right away.

What to do if you can't connect?

Try toggling airplane mode on and off, or restart your device. If the problem persists, contact 24-hour support.

Arriving in Japan

Turn off airplane mode after you get off the plane. You don't need to connect to the airport's Wi-Fi.

No Wi-Fi required, connect directly.

Turn on data roaming

Go to Settings → Cellular → Select eSIM line → Turn on Data Roaming. Don't forget to do this if you turned it off during the pre-test.

Tips for saving data

Data overseas: tips for using it wisely

With a few simple settings, you can significantly reduce your data consumption.

Turn off automatic app updates.

Turn off automatic app updates.

Set automatic updates for the App Store and Google Play to Wi-Fi only. This prevents excessive background data consumption.

Turn off automatic photo syncing.

Pause automatic backups in iCloud Photos or Google Photos, and upload everything over Wi-Fi after you get home.

Utilize offline maps

Download maps of the areas you plan to visit in Google Maps or Apple Maps in advance, so navigation uses no data.

SNS data saver

Turn on data saver mode for Instagram, X (Twitter), and TikTok. Suppress automatic playback of images and videos.

Make use of Wi-Fi hotspots

Make full use of free Wi-Fi at hotels and cafes. Download large files and watch videos while connected to Wi-Fi.

Set to low data mode

"Turning on ""Low Data Mode"" on iOS/Android automatically suppresses background data communication across the entire system."
